About

My name is Michael Jakob. I’m a climate economist engaging in research, consulting and coaching.

I’ve been working on sustainable development for more than 15 years. In addition to my academic research, it has always been important to me to make sound scientific expertise accessible to practitioners. My research and scientific policy advice revolves around the question of how climate protection measures can be designed to be socially just and politically feasible.

I hold degrees in physics, economics, and international relations from universities in Munich, St. Gallen, and Geneva, and a PhD in environmental economics from the Technische Universität Berlin.

I have held appointments at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC), the Öko-Institut, and the Ecologic Institute, and was a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

From this time I have a well-established network of colleagues around the world - not only in Germany, Europe and the USA, but also through field research in Vietnam, Indonesia, Ecuador, Peru and South Africa.

I have advised governments, international organizations and civil society and have contributed as an author to several reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In addition,

I have published numerous articles in scientific journals as well as newspaper articles, blog posts, and several books. As a guest lecturer, I regularly teach at the Hertie School in Berlin.

To support my work with people, I completed a two-year training as a systemic coach at the Society for Systemic Therapy and Consulting (GST) as well as numerous advanced seminars and workshops. I use the experience I gained there for coaching individuals and groups.
